Color- Purple

This is a cup that I caught at the Gasparilla parade this year.  I learned in my graphic design classes that purple is a color that people either like or hate, but it has always been my favorite color since I was a little girl.  I specifically like this shade of purple because it is not too dark or light.  It is a light-hearted and happy color.  It is bright and bold and I am a bubbly and outgoing person, so there is a correlation between my personality and my favorite color.

Five Observations:
  1. Combines different photos in order to make collages
  2. Has traveled across the world to take photos
  3. A lot of the artwork is presented at college art exhibits
  4. He is obviously well known since he has had a lot of press releases
  5. Many of his photos include people
Five Questions:
  1. What inspires you?
  2. Why do you travel so far to take photos?
  3. Do you work by yourself?
  4. So will your permanent collections stay in those select museums forever and not fall apart?
  5. Why did you not attend a college based on the arts and instead went to a public university?

Response
After video chatting with the artist, Tim Roda, I now understand the mind set behind his work.  The inspiration for his pictures comes from different situations that occur in his lifetime.  For example, the photo of the younger boy and older girl sitting next to each other looking away from one another, represents his first son at the pre-teen age.  That is when his son started to like girls, but it is an awkward time because that is when one starts to learn what it feels like to have a crush.  He uses his family in some of his artwork, but is careful of not overexposing them.  I always find it exciting to meet to the artist because you are speaking to the master mind.

 Super Market

The photograph is taken inside of a store and displays food and products categorized within aisles. The emotional impact is a sense of chaos but simultaneously a sense of order. There are many colors and items packed closely together but they are neatly organized. There is an overload of exploding colors and shapes at first glance but with a closer look, there is a sense of calamity within the chaos. The narrative of the photo is there was most likely a mess throughout the aisles with workers organizing and filling the aisles with products. After this photograph, people will probably be scurrying down the aisles disrupting the order and grabbing the items. I feel that the overall meaning is there is diversity among people but we all cohesive form into one unit. I also interpreted the photograph as the idea that as consumers we are overwhelmed with a variety of products that companies are constantly attempting to grab our attention and sell us on their product. We live in a world of materialism, so people are exposed to many brand names.  All of these similar products can seem overwhelming to one person as they are shopping for the goods they need.

Jason Hackett

5 Observations:
  1. Jason likes to work with fine China pieces and is primarily a ceramics artist
  2. The painted pictures of the people on the plates, bowls, and cups are either old-fashioned looking or religious such as the Virgin Mary
  3. Gold is a popular color in his artwork
  4. He uses the "honey comb" pattern as a face for many of the figures on the fine China
  5. He uses body parts such as feet and hands and randomly places on the ceramic piece
5 Questions:

  1.  Are you religious or have a specific view point on Christianity since it is featured in so many of your pieces?
  2. Why do you like working with fine China since it is very fragile and can easily break?
  3. Do the feet or hands of the body mean something specifically to you since you use them frequently in your work?
  4. Is the "honey comb" pattern symbolic to you?
  5. Do you have any other type of artwork other than ceramics?

Claire Sherwood

5 Observations:
  1. She uses a lot of nature and earthly materials to create her artwork.
  2. She imprints a floral lace pattern on many objects.
  3. Much of the artwork is a geometric shape.
  4. Some of the circle pieces hanging on the wall with the swirl on top look like cupcakes.
  5. She expresses her creativity through various forms of artwork such as sculptures, videos, and pictures.

5 Questions:
  1. Why do you use cinder blocks?  They are extremely heavy to move around.
  2. Why did you not attend an art school for your degree?
  3. Why do you only use dark colors? You rarely feature bright colors.
  4. What does the swirly top shape mean? You use on several pieces and put it on people's faces.
  5. What does the phrase" You're not going to find anything" mean?
The Skype conversation we had with Claire Sherwood went really well and she is an intriguing woman.  She was explaining that her view of artwork has changed over the years since she went from being a woman to now a mother and an artist.  Claire now does photography as a form of artwork because it is quick and easy and does not take as long to create a  sculpture.  That is convenient for her since she is taking care of her children.  She also mentioned that she does not have to go to an art gallery or museum to be inspired for a new piece; landscape and the events that occur in daily life evoke her for new art ideas.
